How to Load your Storage Unit
How to Load and Pack Your Storage Unit

Now that you have determined what size storage unit you need, follow these tips to make sure that your unit is packed well and that you can access your items easily.

Store items you'll need most often at the front of the unit.

Yeah, this is one of those seemingly "duh" statements. However, you might be surprised at how often people load their Cougar Den storage unit thinking they won't need anything there until they move their items back out. People frequenlty visit their storage unit to access certain items, so anticipating which items might be needed most and then placing them near the front of the unit makes good sense.

Create an aisle

When you pack your storage unit, make sure to leave aisle. This makes it easy to access items no matter where they are stored. Without a center aisle, you might have to unpack your entire unit to get that one item buried in the back.

Make a map and inventory list

Most people leave things in storage for longer than they anticipated making it more difficult to remember where certain items were stored in a storage unit. Make an inventory of your stored items and a map of where they were stored and keep it in a safe place at home or in a safety deposit box.

Use pallets or skids

Do not place boxes directly on concrete floors, but use pallets or skids to allow air flow around and under items.

Storing odd shaped items

If you're storing tables and other furniture, remove legs and store tabletops and sofas on end, to save space. Use trash cans to store shovels, hoes and rakes or other garden tools. Whenever possible, place dressers and tables top-to-top. Mattresses should be covered and stored flat on level surfaces.

Protect your stuff!

Use protective covers and treat wood surfaces before storing. When storing metal items, to retard rust, wipe all metal surfaces with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil. Pack blankets, draperies, and dress clothes on the hanger in a wardrobe box. Old photographs tend to curl over time. To keep them flat, place them between two pieces of cardboard and tape them together.

Locks

Always use high quality locks on your unit. Locks are available for sale-just ask your site manager for a recommendation.
